Relocation, we do like to be beside the seaside
Relocation will enable Just Listening to You to continue its last two years work in supporting friends with mental health issues.
Relocation to Westcliff
Relocation to Westcliff will enable me to support more people with their individual needs.
Some days all I can do is wait to feel better, and the feeling of loneliness and despair is so bad, I can’t begin to articulate it. Living with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety is hard work, and I will be honest, most days I do not want to get up!
Wednesday was oh so different; I got dealt with an Incredible Wonderful Wednesday.
I had pre-packed and prepared the night before. Like an excited child I packed folders, paper, pens, bluetac, membership forms, rule poster… just about everything bar the kitchen sin, but that was not on my list!
Relocation, Patience & Planning
The patience of waiting finally paid off and I had done all we could do in preparation for the big day.
Bronwyn and I had met, drunk numerous coffees at Anke’s Tea Coffee Lounge and oh goodness cheesecake like you’ve never had before!
I had a mental note also of all the items I needed, backed up with everything listed down, you know already that my memory has serious issues and doesn’t work so well.
But fear not, Melanie is always on hand and experienced to my last minute “I need …” and very responsive is she. I am extremely grateful for this.
I am without my car at the moment, so my lovely daughter Hollie organised the squeeze in to her little Peugot; my triwalker frame, my walking stick and at least five bags laden with milk, various varieties of tea, coffee, sugar, business cards, our six monthly guide, Maria and most importantly … biscuits!
Wow! Perhaps she has a future in furniture removals?
Hollie had no sooner parked up at Crowstone and before we knew it, we were surrounded by my wonderful helpers and friends, Ann, Maria, Nick, each one taking one if not two bags into the church, and all that was left for me was walking up the disabled friendly ramp with my triwalker.
Blessed with great timing, Melanie arrives. Yay!
We were greeted by the warmth of the foyer, it was bitterly cold outside, so hugs all round and requests for a cuppa or hot water bottle was a good start.
Relocation, a Cuppa Before We Commence…
Priorities straight, the kettle and water heater gets switched on for that all important cup of tea.
Busy starts; lots of movement and activity from everyone. Foodbank was active, clients being welcomed by the impressive team of volunteers and food distributed.
Bronwyn then arrives with our amazing presentation board, she spent the huge amount of £5. It looked amazing with our logo shining brightly, profiles of the trustees and the mission statement for people to read.
It was laid out beautifully for all to see on a stunning green cloth to enhance the “look”.
At the strike of 2…
2pm came quickly, and almost on the strike of 2, so many new friends had shown up, it was overwhelming. I knew there is a need out there, the statistics on attendance for the last two years speak for themselves, but to get so many people attending the New Year relaunch. Wow!
My helpers went into action; numerous teas and coffees made, biscuits circulated, these were flowing back and forth in abundance. Other helpers were entertaining new friends about Just Listening to You. Everyone had someone to talk to; so diversity begins.
Bronwyn sat back entertaining new friends about our membership, and told them all about Just Listening to You (JLTY).
It’s quite simple really, you agree to a few basic rules of confidentiality and respect, and you can attend our weekly JLTY get togethers as and when you feel the need, no charge.
Also, for those of you needing one to one, I’m here and this can be arranged.
Relocation Provides Opportunity
Curiosity beckoned and time to give a presentation, I kept it brief and told the JLTY story and long term JLTY friend Nick offered to share his story.
I watched him as he explained how far he had come in his journey, how he found JLTY, the importance of being listened to, how much he worked on the positive well-being of his mental health. He has achieved so much.
It seemed a false reality; only yesterday the group had been held in my home; two years, it doesn’t seem like it, I know.
Back to the day, Guests were welcomed by my lovely friend Julia, selected for her big heart which is matched with a big smile and her ability to make everyone feel at home and very welcome.
Jennette swooped onto a table full of new faces, not shy to share, she took the time to talk about Just Listening to You JLTY and the importance of being listened to. This is positive mental health in the community. She’s my next trustee; yes she is!
Mark, a trustee, got involved. After 30 years in the social care profession, he was keen to utilise his skills with the group and soon bonded with some guests.
Mental Health Experience
I have learnt over the last two years that it is so important to persevere with Just Listening to You and listen; we have so much value in today’s world. With official mental health ratios reported of 1 person in every 3 suffering with mental health difficulties, but in my opinion and personal experience, I believe it to be more like 2 in 3.
The last two years have been testing, but we have learnt that most things that have value come through at difficult times; this is where the patience and hard work of Just Listening to You has paid off.
The journey of the last two years has seen the JLTY family be persistent and build up our resilience to cope with the troubled times, they exist of course, we can’t ignore them, but we pull ourselves together as a team and face the challenges head on.
We’ve experienced lots of hiccups on our way; growing pains are to be expected.
Lots of curve balls, spinning from left and right but we adapted, we move on; we changed and continue to change …
We have helped individuals with complex mental health needs, depression, anxiety, bi-polar, schizophrenia, fatigue, self esteem, post natal depression, S.A.D., suicide, anorexia, bulimia, loneliness, OCD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Talking about change, we have a fantastic opportunity in front of us. My magical lounge and garden in Wickford will have to wait a while, as we settle into our new home at Crowstone.
The next chapter begins …
Tremendous lessons ahead for me, challenged with providing the very best service to our friends of Just Listening to You. I am nervous as an ice cube in the sun shine, but Bronwyn will be there holding my hand, and I in turn will hold our friends hands.
And so I had an Incredible Wonderful Wednesday and I hope you did too. Here’s to a positive change and a new home at Crowstone. Thank you Melanie.
